This is the outlet or terminal point to a drainage system that can connect to some open water body, such as a river or lake, or with a pipe or open channel.
The tailwater level here may control flows and water levels upstream through backwater effects.
Outfall nodes are nodes to which flows drain through a DRAINS network. They can be an outfall with a nominated tailwater level, or simply a place outside the system to which flows are directed.
If a user needs to have a tailwater level that varies with time, this can be done using an artificial channel at the outlet. The method is described in a worksheet of the DRAINS Utility spreadsheet.

Here you can enter a node as a terminal point or outlet to a drainage system. The node can be an outlet to the pipe system, or a receiving point for overflows that are directed outside the system. In both cases the window will provide a text box for ...

This is the water level occurring at the outfall or lower end of a drainage system, which can influence water levels and flows through a system due to backwater effects. Setting an appropriate tailwater level can be difficult. The following comments ...
Surcharge Pits and Converters
A surcharge pit is one that is intended to overflow. It may have an outlet pipe that is smaller in diameter than its inlet pipe(s), or it may have no outlet pipe at all. The latter situation occurs in localised pipe systems that are intended to carry ...
Culvert hydraulics
While culverts are simple in concept, consisting of a pipe, an entrance and an outlet, their hydraulics can be quite complicated. Many combinations of flows can occur, depending on the headwater and tailwater levels, whether flows inside the culvert ...
