Merging files

Merging files

DRAINS allows models of systems that have the same base to be joined together using the merging procedure:

(a)     Edit the files for the two models so that there are two adjacent pits with the same names in both files (these can be dummy pits entered by substituting additional lines in spreadsheets exported from DRAINS and transferring the information back to DRAINS using functions in the Edit menu).

(b)     Ensure that only one file includes the sub-catchments and overflow routes associated with these pits.

(c)     Using the Export a Merge File option in the File menu, create a .mrg merge file for the upper system that drains into the other one.

(d)     Then close the DRAINS file and open the lower system.  Using the Import a Merge File option in the File menu, read in the .mrg merge file created in Step (b).

(e)     The merged system will appear. Tidy this up, ensuring that there are no duplicated id numbers, save and run it as required (if any id numbers associated with nodes are duplicated, make one of these blank. Do not attempt to substitute other numbers).

You can practice these procedures using the Toowoomba DRAINS files included in the ProgramData\DRAINS\ installation folder of DRAINS.
