Depression storage

Depression storage

This is a depth of rainfall (mm) that is assumed to be retained in depressions or puddles on a catchment surface and evaporated. It is a kind of initial loss, but it may be assumed to occur after infiltration, so that in the Horton (ILSAX) hydrological model used in DRAINS, it is subtracted after continuing infiltration losses.

Suggested values are 1 mm for paved and supplementary areas and 5 mm for grassed areas. However, the paved and supplementary area values might be set between 0 and 5 mm, and the grassed area value between 2 and 10 mm.

Depression storage, and infiltration in general, are related to the ponding of water on catchment surfaces.
