In urban drainage applications, baseflows are constant flows discharging into a pipe or channel system. In DRAINS, they can be introduced at any pit or node. The flows caused by rainfalls being converted to stormwater runoff are superimposed onto these.
Baseflows into pits are entered into a property sheet opened from the button named Baseflow in the Pit property sheet.
In this sheet you can enter or review baseflows. You must specify a flowrate and indicate whether this is to be applied outside the pit or inside. This choice gives flexibility in dealing with various situations involving constant flows such as sanitary sewage flows, groundwater seepage and industrial discharges.
The baseflow sheet for a node is similar.
DRAINS cannot model negative baseflows as these cause conflicts in computational procedures. This baseflows can describe infiltration into pipes, but not exfiltration from pipes.
You need to be careful when using baseflows, as these are not obvious and may be forgotten, leading to overestimates of flows. They do appear in the spreadsheet outputs obtained from Edit → Copy Results to Spreadsheet.
